The US President Joe Biden’s administration temporarily banned all oil and gas leases at the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), home to polar bears, wolves, and caribou, in Alaska. This move overturns one of the latest decisions of Donald Trump’s administration. Indeed, on January 6th, the former president had decided to sell oil leases in the refuge to expand fossil fuel and mineral development.

The ANWR is an oil-rich region where many endangered species live and which is considered sacred by the indigenous Gwich’in people. However, the push for exploration in the ANWR has been the subject of a decades-long dispute.

In my opinion, even though oil drilling could bring in significant sums of money and provide jobs for the people of Alaska, it is better in our time to consider environmental and climate threats more than economic benefits.
